Icelandic New Energy

Icelandic New Energy Ltd ( Íslensk NýOrka ehf ) is an Icelandic electricity company.

Icelandic New Energy promotes the use of hydrogen fuel in Iceland. The company was founded in 1999 following the decision of the Icelandic Parliament in 1998 to transform Iceland into a hydrogen economy and achieve total independence from fossil fuels by 2050.

Icelandic New Energy was formed from draft research carried out by the University of Iceland and is 51% owned by Vistorka , the remainder being equally owned by DaimlerChrysler , Norsk Hydro and Shell Hydrogen . VistOrka itself belongs to Icelandic New Business Venture Fund (Nýsköpunarsjóður), the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the national electricity company Landsvirkjun , Reykjavík Energy (Orkuveitu Reykjavíkur), Hitaveita Suðurnesja, the Technological Institute of Iceland , the Fertilizer Plant (Áburjanar) the University of Iceland and Reykjavik Resources.

Since inception, Icelandic New Energy has done a number of hydrogen test projects in the country. The company is also involved in hydrogen fuel consultancy, educational seminars and other activities.
