Idam

Idam refers to a region in New Guinea . The Idam region (Idam Census District, Idam CD) in the Yapsie Rural local-level government of the Telefomin District of the Sandaun Province is only sparsely populated and rainforest.

Population and nature

The inhabitants of the Idam region speak Abau , a subgroup of the Sepik Ramu languages ( Papua language ) spoken in the upper Sepik Basin from the state border to the Bewani Mountains on the north coast. Here in Idam and on the August River in the west, the Up-River dialect was spoken in the past, but has since been replaced by the Down-River dialect of the Middle Sepik. The upper reaches of the river in the mountains are counted as part of the Mianmin (or Suganga , Ok family of the Trans New Guinea languages ) culture of the inner highlands, while the small region of the Amto-Musan can be found in the mountains in the east . Left May languages predominate in the neighboring regions of the upper May River to the east .

In the villages of Idam No. 1 (Bablediam, Anaiehyom) , Idam No. 2 (Seleliam) and Bisiaburu live about 600 people, the inhabitants of the mountain villages Idam 1 and 2 are spread over a dozen camps. In Idam No. 1 there was a school in 1980, in Idam No. 2 a small church, the mission station is the parish of St. Isidore Idam. It was reported, however, that the residents are increasingly giving up churches that used to stand in every village. The Idam were particularly hostile to the Amto from the neighboring Simaiya Valley before the government banned tribal fighting.

Idam No. 1 has an airstrip (built in the 1960s), Idam No. 2 is a little southwest of it, Bisiaburu is two hours paddle from there, another two hours are to Iaburu am Sepik.

The Idam folk art is described as relatively independent, especially the painted large shields , some of which are souvenirs from the Empress Augusta River Expedition 1912/13 in the Ethnological Museum (formerly the Museum of Ethnology) in Berlin.
