Ignacio de Jerusalem y Stella

Ignacio de Jerusalem y Stella (Ignazio Gerusalemme) (* around 1710 in Lecce , Italy , † 1769 in Mexico City ) was a composer and violin virtuoso .

Life

Ignazio Gerusalemme was born the son of a conductor. His father trained him musically at a young age. In 1732 he left his homeland and settled in Cádiz as a violinist . In 1742 he embarked for New Spain . First he was violinist and composer at the theater "Antiguo Coliseo" in Mexico City, since 1746 composer and choirmaster at the local cathedral . In 1749 he became conductor of the cathedral's instrumental ensemble after winning the competition for this position, the "Examen de oposición".

Afterlife

The compositions for violin by Ignacio de Jerusalem and especially his vocal compositions spread across the continent. They were preserved in a few manuscripts with counterfactures by the Guatemalan composer Manuel Joseph de Quiroz , who processed his secular cantatas into sacred music with Spanish texts.
