Ignatius Krahl

Ignatius Krahl (born April 21, 1828 in Lomnitz an der Popelka , † July 31, 1886 in Ossegg ) was abbot of the Osek Monastery .

Life

Ignaz Krahl attended high schools in Jitschin and Komotau and studied philosophy in Prague . Joined the Osek Monastery in 1847, took his religious vows in 1851, studied theology at the home school and in the Leitmeritz seminary and was ordained a priest in 1852. For four years he was curator of the abbey library and during this time he also dealt with philosophical studies and the writing of several youth publications. In 1856 he started teaching geography and history at the Komotau grammar school.

On February 8, 1877 he was elected abbot. He paid particular attention to gardening and fruit growing. He had new varieties planted and the gardens surrounding the monastery redesigned. Especially the so-called park, the abbey garden, became a popular attraction for spa guests from Teplitz and other visitors. In the free hours he devoted himself to the study of the sciences, especially history, botany and astronomy. He died on July 31, 1886 after a long illness.
