Igor A. Novikov grew up in Moscow and, at the request of his father, attended the Ilya Repin Art School and the Moscow Art High School as a child . From 1981 he studied at the Vasily Surikov Art Academy , the central art institute of the Soviet Union, also in Moscow. In 1987 he graduated with a diploma as a painter. Igor Novikov studied at the Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, Netherlands. After completing his studies, he and colleagues founded the non-conformist artists' colony Furmanni-Gasse in Moscow, which also attracted many interested parties from the West, but was dissolved after four years.

The pupil already received his first exhibitions. Participation in various group exhibitions by young Russian artists opened the way for exhibitions abroad, especially in 1985 in Amsterdam (Netherlands), 1989 in Warsaw (Poland), 1990 in Martigny (Switzerland), 1995 in Klagenfurt (Austria), 1997 and Berlin (Germany).

The highlights were exhibitions in the two large national Russian art museums: a large solo exhibition in 1993 in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and the inclusion in a collective exhibition of the art of Russian nonconformists in 1994 in the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, which in the same year also in the Polish National Museum was shown, "MOSCOW-NEW YORK" Chelsea Art Museum New York National Center for Contemporary Arts in Moscow, Kolodzei Art Foundation 2008. Since he received international recognition, he was allowed to work abroad even before the political change in Russia , America, New York, Australia, India, Holland, Art Expo “Tias”, Tokyo, France, London, Austria, Germany, Hong Kong, EXPO'92 Seville, Spain, Turkey, Warsaw and Italy.

From 1990 to 1993 he worked with a grant from UNESCO in La Chaux-de-Fonds (Switzerland) in a studio that the city made available. After further stays in Klagenfurt (Austria) and Berlin (Germany), Igor Novikow moved to Switzerland in 1990, where he still lives and works today. He is a Russian and Swiss citizen.
