Igraine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Igraine ( Igerne or Ygraine ) was the mother of King Arthur . First mentioned by Geoffrey of Monmouth in his Historia Regum Britanniae , he describes her as the daughter of Amlawdd Wledig , a member of the royal house of Dumnonia . Her first marriage was Gorlois , Duke of Cornwall , and after his death her second marriage was his former ally Uther Pendragon , the Great King of Britain . She was the mother of five children from their two marriages, many of which play an important role in the Arthurian legend .

Your children from Gorlois were:

  • Gormant , a son,
  • Elaine , a daughter,
  • Anna- Morgause , a daughter, better known as Morgause -depending on the source, is also regarded as Igraines sister- and
  • Morgaine , a daughter better known as Morgaine le Fay.

Her only child from her marriage to Uther Pendragon was:

She is also mentioned, perhaps in error, as the mother of Cado , King of Dumnonia, by her cousin Geraint , King of Dumnonia. Another tradition mentions her as the mother of the Duke of Artois , Grimald . Cado is commonly seen as a cousin rather than a brother to Igraine's other children.
