Gorlois

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gorlois is in Arthurian legend the Duke of Cornwall who is married to Igraine , who (according to Geoffrey of Monmouth in his Historia Regum Britanniae ) daughter of Amlawdd Wledig , a member of the royal house of Dumnonia .

He has four children with Igraine:

According to Geoffrey of Monmouth, the British High King Uther Pendragon is so fascinated by Igraine's beauty that he brings about Gorloi's death, sleeps with Igraine under false pretenses, she marries and becomes Arthur's father .

Later texts such as Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur add magical elements to the base, such as the magician Merlin , who leads Igraine to believe that Uther Pendragon is Gorlois.

It is likely that an actual Gorlois (Gwrlais in Welsh ) was the governor of Cornwall under King Heiress of Dumnonia .
