The Igreja Matriz de Santa Cruz (German: Main Church of Santa Cruz ) is a church in Santa Cruz on Madeira . It has been registered as a protected cultural monument under the names Igreja Paroquial de Santa Cruz (German: Parish Church of Santa Cruz ) and Igreja de São Salvador (German: Church of the Redeemer ) since 1948 (Level IIP, Imóvel de Interest Público).

history

As early as 1500, the old church Igreja do Salvador in Santa Cruz was considered too small to accommodate the entire population of the region who attended the services on Sundays and public holidays. Therefore, it was decided to build a new mother church, for which Gomes Vaz donated a piece of land.

In 1502, King Manuel I gave permission and secured funding for the construction of the new Church of the Redeemer, which was to replace the original chapel. The nobleman João de Freitas of the court of Manuel I, who was highly regarded in Santa Cruz and co-founder of the merciful Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Santa Cruz and who brought Santa Cruz to the community with the status of a self-governing vila, was commissioned with the implementation.

Construction began in 1507, the church was completed in the early 16th century in the Manueline - late Gothic style with a three-aisled floor plan in the style of Funchal Cathedral . The architect was likely Diogo Boitaca . After the earthquake of March 1748, there was restoration work.

Several art historians had dealt with interior design in the 20th century, including Manuel C. de Almeida Cayola Zagallo (1915–1970) and, more recently, Isabel Santa Clara, who sought to reconstruct the arrangement of a six-part polyhedron and altarpiece and the direct influence of Italian painters of the Mannerism in Madeira and in this church.

In the literature, the church is sometimes referred to as Igreja Matriz de Santa Cruz (do Salvador) .
