Il pulcino Pio is a song on Italian broadcaster Radio Globo that became a national summer hit in 2012.

prehistory
In the 80s, the Brazilian Erisvaldo Da Silva wrote the children's song O Pintinho Piu . The song has a similar structure to the well-known children's song Old MacDonald hat 'ne Farm : The first stanza is about the little chick (pintinho ) making piu ( beep) . In each subsequent stanza there is another animal with the corresponding sound (a cackling hen, a crowing rooster, etc.) and all previous animals are mentioned again so that the stanzas become longer and longer. When the Internet platform YouTube became popular in the late 2000s , videos of this song were also uploaded. Many videos were created, some of which were cut from images. On the other hand, people performed the song on stage or in pantomime in front of the camera. An eleven-year-old boy, whose video was clicked several million times in 2011, was even invited onto television. Other videos also made it over the million mark. The text of the original song was also changed. In addition to the slower original, a highly pitched, fast version was created.
Il pulcino Pio
The local radio station Radio Globo , based in Rome, had a success in 2011 with a song about the Roman Ostia Beach: two presenters sang to the tune of Mr. Saxobeat .
The following year they took on O Pintinho Piu . They secured the rights to the song and created their own Italian version. The first verse is about the chick on the radio that beeps. This is followed by a cackling hen (la gallina cò), a crowing rooster (il gallo corococò), a gurgling turkey (il tacchino glu glu glu), a cooing pigeon (il piccione tru), a meowing cat (il gatto miao) barking dog (il cane bau bau), a grumbling goat (la capra meee), a bleating lamb (l'agnello bee), a mooing cow (la mucca moo) and a roaring bull (il toro muu). The punch line in Il pulcino Pio is a humming tractor (il trattore bruum) that runs over the chick.
The presenter and actress Morgana Giovannetti from the morning program on Radio Globo played the version in the fast version. The broadcaster commissioned a video animation, which was posted on YouTube in May 2012 . The video received almost six million views within three months. In addition, there were many private parodies that also achieved high access numbers. On July 18, the song was released as a download and reached number 2 within two weeks and number 1 in the Italian charts after another three weeks . Eight weeks after that, it topped the chart and sold over 60,000 times (download sales). YouTube views rose to over 25 million.
After many were dissatisfied with the end of the chick, a second version was created with the title La Vendetta ("The Revenge"), in which the chick gets fit in a different way in each stanza. And when the tractor appears at the end, the chick puts on boxing gloves, hits the vehicle in front of the bonnet and it then stretches its four wheels away.
Other international versions
Towards the end of the year, Radio Globo published the song in various other languages with the same content. The French version Le poussin piou , the Spanish version El pollito pio and the Dutch version Het kuikentje Piep made it into the respective single charts. There were also versions in Greek ( Poulaki Tsiou / To Πουλάκι Τσίου ), English ( The Little Chick Cheep ), Catalan ( El pollet Piu ) and Romanian ( Puiul piu ). At the end of January 2013, a German version with the title Das kleine Küken beeps was released , which was able to place in the charts in Germany and Austria.
