The Illig Maschinenbau GmbH & Co. KG is a German manufacturer of machines and tools for thermoforming . The company is based in Heilbronn in the north of the state of Baden-Württemberg .
The company goes back to a small repair shop founded by Adolf Illig in 1946. In 1948 Illig developed his first own product with a pillar drill . From 1952 Illig manufactured tumble dryers on behalf of the Heilbronn company Passat Maschinenbau. The experience gained from the construction of tumble dryers prompted Illig to develop its first own thermoforming machine with the model name UA 100. In 1960, the following model R 650 was the world's first automatic vacuum forming machine to process pre-printed film for the manufacture of decorated lids. By 1961 the company had already employed 160 people. The number of employees rose to 480 by 1967. In the same year, the production of tumble dryers was finally discontinued in order to be able to use the production capacities that were released for the manufacture of thermoforming machines. In 1976, Illig France was the company's first foreign branch.
