The Ilmin Museum of Art ( German : Ilmin Art Museum , Korean : 일민 미술관) is a private art museum in Seoul , South Korea , in which mainly Korean art is exhibited.

history

The museum was founded in 1994 by the non-profit Ilmin Cultural Foundation ( 일민 문화 재단 ) in memory of Kim Sang-man (1910–1994), the former president of Dong-a Ilbo , one of the most important newspaper publishers in Korea. Kim had advocated Korean journalism and culture throughout his life. The museum is named after his pseudonym “Ilmin” ( 일민 , 一民 ), which literally means “one people”. In December 1996 the museum was opened with three exhibition rooms under the name Ilmin Art Hall . After a year of renovation, the museum reopened in February 2002.

The museum is at the south end of Gwanghwamun Plaza in Building 139 Sejongno (Sejong Avenue) in Jongno-gu .

The museum has five floors with an area of ​​650 m². It is located in the former Dong-a Ilbo newspaper publishing house , the oldest publishing house in Korea.

Exhibits

The museum consists of two large exhibition halls and the Ilmin collection. The Ilmin Collection includes over 430 works of art, particularly Korean porcelain, Korean paintings, and Korean calligraphy from the Goryeo and Joseon Dynasties, as well as over 1200 drawings and paintings published by various newspapers. The museum also houses a modern art collection with 100 works of art. It provides an introduction to contemporary art, such as modern paintings, photographs, video art, and installation art .

It also houses South Korea's only archive for documentary films and video art on the fourth floor, which presents its collection to the public. There are about 200 documentaries and 50 videos by South Korean and international artists.

activities

The museum publishes the art history work Ilmin Visual Culture (일민 시각 문화). It awards the Ilmin Art Award (일민 문화상) and the Ilmin Fellowship , which supports artists and art scholars .
