Imants Ziediņš

Imants Ziediņš (born September 20, 1969 ) is an officer in the Latvian armed forces with the rank of brigadier general . He has been Chief of Staff and Deputy Commander of the Latvian National Armed Forces since 2019 .

Life

The current general was born in 1969 in what was then the Latvian SSR .

Military career

As part of the regaining of national independence in Latvia, Imants Ziediņš joined the armed forces in his home country that were being rebuilt in 1992. In the following years he served there in various posts. Ziediņš received his military training in Latvia and abroad (in Sweden, Germany, Canada, Romania and at the Baltic Defense College in Estonia). He gained experience in the field of international cooperation at NATO headquarters and as commander of the Latvian contingent of the Afghanistan mission. In 2012, Ziediņš was appointed Chief of Staff of the Latvian National Guard ( Latvian Zemessardze ).

Five years later, he was transferred to the Armed Forces Headquarters and appointed Deputy Chief of Staff of the Latvian National Armed Forces. Associated with this was the promotion to brigadier general in December of the same year. In June 2019, Ziediņš took over the management of the staff of the armed forces.
