Immo von Gorze , also Immo von Reichenau , (* 10th century; † 11th century) was abbot of Gorze Abbey from 984 to 1008 and abbot of Prüm (1003–1006) and Reichenau (1006–1008).

Life

Immo was abbot of Gorze Monastery from 984 to 1006. Bishop Milo von Minden visited him there. He gave him some relics of St. Gorgonius , whereupon the Bishop of Minden thanked him by sending the Passio sancti Dorothei et Gorgonii written by Adalbert von Magdeburg . Immo was one of the most important reformer abbots of the 11th century and is described as an “awesome ascetic”. He influenced the later Archbishop Heribert of Cologne , who completed part of his training in Gorze Monastery.

From 1003 to 1006 Immo was also Abbot of Prüm and carried over the Lorraine monastery reform there. In the year 1006 Heinrich II. Appointed Immo against the will of the monks as abbot of the Reichenau monastery. There, too, he tried with great severity to enforce the principles of the Lorraine monastery reform. Immo tried to enforce his position by imposing fasting, corporal punishment and exile. This led to some monks leaving the monastery, taking away precious books and church treasures. Only two years after the appointment, Heinrich II finally gave in to the demands of the Reichenau convent members and replaced Immo in Reichenau monastery with Bern from the Prüm monastery. The repair work on Reichenau Minster , which was started under Abbot Immo and was badly damaged by fire in 1006, could only be completed under his successor in office, Bern.
