Polnoon Castle was a castle southwest of the farm of the same name in the Scottish council area of East Renfrewshire . It was on the Polnoon Water , a tributary of the White Cart Water , about two kilometers southeast of Eaglesham . The ruin has been classified as a Scheduled Monument in the Scottish Monument Lists since 1992 .

history

There was once a moth at the site of Polnoon Castle . After the Battle of Otterburn in 1388, John Montgomery had Henry Percy's Polnoon Castle built from his ransom share from his capture . It was probably completed in the last decade of the 14th century. The building was renovated in 1617, but was described as a ruin as early as 1676. The structure of the former castle was still preserved in the 19th century. Today the masonry is largely destroyed, covered with earth and made up of trees. A coat of arms that was once placed above the entrance gate still adorns the entrance of the Cross Keys Inn in Eaglesham.

description

The ruins of Polnoon Castle are to the northwest of the Polnoon Farm on the banks of the Polnoon Water. The at least four meter high mound of earth of the former Motte is striking in the landscape. The hill, which is now covered with trees, has a rectangular base area with sides of 30 m and 22 m at the base, which tapers up to 18 m × 10 m. Between these is the earth-covered masonry of Polnoon Castle, which is largely destroyed today. The remains of a 1.6 m thick enclosure wall can be seen at the foot of the hill. Particularly in the northwest, there are still individual pieces of the wall. A tower off the hill was built on bedrock. On the basis of the remains, a small but robust system can be concluded.
