reception

Imperfect Harmonies is described in a similar way by many recipients. The reviews of the album, however, vary greatly depending on the critic.

Some critics are of the opinion that Tankian's music has evolved from the previously known style with Imperfect Harmonies. For example, Adrian Meyer from laut.de writes : " SOAD (or the end of their creative break) never seemed to have moved further away than after listening to" Imperfect Harmonies "." In this context, the changed instrumentation is particularly mentioned; the orchestra in particular plays a much larger role than before.

Most often, the music on the album is described as "experimental", "rich in detail" or "overloaded". This fact provokes both positive and negative reactions. While some critics describe the album as “captivating” and “beautiful”, others find it difficult to access. Still others expressly point out this inconsistency, such as Tom Jurek from allmusic.com:

"Imperfect Harmonies is drenched in seeming contradictions, lyrically, sonically, and musically: [...]."

"Imperfect harmonies is full of apparent contradictions, lyrically, tonally and musically: [...]."

- Tom Jurek : Review of the album on allmusic.com

Depending on the recipient's assessment, Tankian manages to combine these contradictions into a functioning work or fails because of his ambitions.
