history

The first settlers came to the area of what later became Imperial shortly after 1900. Initially, the settlement created in 1908 was called Redlands, in 1910 it was renamed Imperial in order to make the place attractive to settlers in connection with the Imperial Valley , a post office and a school were built. In 1911 the future location was publicly advertised on the property owned by Benjamin E. Bush. In order to encourage settlers to settle, a dam was built on the Pecos River 13 kilometers west of the village to create a water reservoir, and from there an irrigation canal was built to Imperial to secure the water supply for the village and the farms. Buyers of land parcels acquired water rights at the same time as the land.

The place grew only slowly, however, because the high salt content of the water and declining water resources made running farms financially unattractive. In 1925, only 25 people lived in Imperial. The population rose slowly but steadily, to 250 inhabitants in 1949 and to almost 1,000 in the late 1960s. Since then the population has been falling, it was 720 in 1990, 428 in 2000 and 278 in 2010.
