Imperium Galactica is a computer game developed by the Hungarian game development company Digital Reality and published in 1997 , which combines the elements of turn-based strategy games and real-time strategy games . The successor Imperium Galactica II appeared in 2000. Nexus: The Jupiter Incident , developed by Mithis Entertainment , was planned as a further successor and "Imperium Galactica 3", but the game was renamed during development and converted into a more tactically oriented game.

The terrestrial galactic empire is on the brink of collapse, especially the war with the species of Garthogs is wearing it down. At this point, a young, promising commander appears in the sector around the planets Achilles, Naxos and San Sterling and takes care of order. Imperium Galactica is a single player real time strategy game. Even if it is a real-time game, it is classified as a 4X game (eXpand, eXploit, eXplore, eXterminate) as it was Master of Orion . Initially, the player only has a small spaceship with three escorts under his command. This allows the player to carry out simple missions while building three space colonies. A special order is necessary for his promotion to captain. After the promotion (Chapter 2), smaller ships can also be produced in the now 4 space colonies, the command ship is also somewhat more powerful. Again, there is a critical mission that is necessary for the promotion. After being promoted to Commander, you receive a flagship and the ability to research and produce orbital stations. At this point, you are in permanent war with a neighboring race called the Garthogg. With the extinction of the Garthogg you are promoted to admiral who has the resources of all colonies and has many areas to explore. You are constantly harassed by foreign peoples, but you can also found new colonies. As a Grand Admiral, you also have the option of conducting diplomatic negotiations.

The story serves as an entry point, it gradually introduces new game concepts and applies them - planet management, space battles, ground battles, research, component & ship production, diplomacy while the player moves through the ranks from Lieutenant to Captain, Commander, Admiral and finally becomes Fleet Admiral, which gives him full control over all game functions. Overall, Imperium Galactica combines the elements of a 2D space battle in real time (with the option of freezing time) with building strategy in the colonial administration and with real-time battles on the ground, which is almost unique in this connection.

Open-IG is an open source reimplementation in Java that is hosted on Google Code . Runs on Windows, Linux, Mac OS X and all platforms with a Java VM . A copy of Imperium Galactica is not required.
