In-the-wild

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The expression In the wild (English for in the wild , in contrast to closed environments such as zoo or laboratory) is a technical terminus of electronic data processing (EDP) .

It is in connection with computer viruses or -würmern as analogy used to refer to viruses or worms that actually in the Internet are circulating or other media. In contrast to this, numerous variants of viruses and worms as well as proof-of-concept viruses or worms are only available in the (protected) laboratories of antivirus program manufacturers and therefore do not pose any immediate danger to the user.

According to Paul Ducklin's definition , a virus must "spread between the computers of unsuspecting users during everyday operations" to be considered in the wild .
