The concerts
Houston
In 1986, the city of Houston and the state took place on April 5 to mark the 150th anniversary of Texas and the 25th anniversary of the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center of NASA a free for the viewer / listener open-air concert instead. The concert was attended by an estimated 1,300,000 people, earning Jarre an entry in the Guinness Book of Records . Jarre recorded the concept album Rendez-Vous for this event , which was performed in full with the exception of the first track. Particular attention was paid to the piece Ron's Peace . The astronaut Ronald McNair wanted to record a piece on the saxophone during the Challenger space mission STS-51-L in space . A video recording of this musical recording in space should be shown at the concert. However, the Challenger exploded shortly after take-off on January 28, tearing the astronauts to their deaths, making it NASA's biggest disaster to date. Jarre wanted to cancel the concert planned for April 5, 1986, but the NASA astronauts persuaded him to hold it anyway. The concert was then dedicated to the deceased crew.

The albums
From the recordings of the concerts, various albums with different numbers and lengths of individual tracks as well as total running times were created over the years. You can roughly distinguish between a short version with 9 or 10 tracks - here the blessing of the Pope was separated as a separate track - and a playing time of about 45 minutes, as well as a long version with 11 tracks and a playing time of almost 72 minutes. In terms of content, the albums in the studio were provided with transitions and recordings, which lead the listener to various points and situations of the events of that time and also give a small insight into the political and social situation at that time.
