Inagaki Chūsei ( Japanese 稲 垣 仲 静 , actually Inagaki Kōtarō (稲 垣 広 太郎); born 1897 in Kyoto ; died June 24, 1922 ) was a Japanese painter of the Nihonga direction during the Taishō period who died early .

life and work

Inagaki Chūsei was born as the eldest son of Inagaki Takejirō (稲 垣 竹 次郎) in the Shimogyō district of Kyoto. His father was a Nihonga painter who went by the stage name Chikubu (竹 埠), but who later became known as an artisan with lacquer work. Chusei's younger brother was Toshijrō (稔 次郎; 1902–1963), who made a name for himself as a textile dyer .

From 1912 Chūsei attended the painting department of the “Municipal School for Art and Applied Arts Kyōto” (京都 市立 美術 工 芸 学校, Kyōto shiritsu bijutsu kōgei gakkō) and then after graduating there in 1917 the “Municipal School of Painting” (京都 市立 絵 画 専 門学校, Kyōto shiritsu kaiga semmon gakkō), which he graduated in 1920. While he was still at college, he was able to show the picture "猫" (Neko - cat) at the 2nd exhibition of the "Kokuga sōsaku kyōkai" (国画 創作 協会) in 1919. In 1922 he was selected for the exhibition of the Kyūmeikai (九名 会) in Fukumura's Yō'undō (祥雲 堂) shop with Fukuda Heihachirō and others, but died in June of that year of an intestinal disease,

In August Inagaki's painter friends organized a memorial exhibition in the Kyōto Prefectural Library (京都 府 立 図 書館, Kyōto furitsu toshokan), for which galleries such as Ōhatas Kōsodō (後 素 堂) brought out a volume "仲 静 遺 作" (Chūsei isaku., Chūsebracht) The realistic drawings convey a European perspective, but it can be seen that Chūsei was also interested in the flower-and-bird pictures (花鳥画, Kachōga) of the Song and Yuan periods . In addition, a picture like that of the courtesan conveys a touch of eroticism, as can also be seen in Chusei's contemporaries Kainoshō Tadaoto .
