Independence Square is a square in Basseterre in the Parish of Saint George Basseterre , St. Kitts and Nevis .

geography

The square is an irregular square with a large circular fountain in the center. It is centrally located in Basseterre, between Cayon Street in the north and Bay Road in the south. It is framed by North, East, South and West Independence Street, with West Independence Street forming the connection between Cayon Street and Bay Road. The St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank is also on this road . Opposite on the east side of the square is the Basseterre Co-Cathedral of Immaculate Conception .

history

The square was originally called Pall Mall Square and was a place for the slave trade . Slaves from Africa were locked in the basement of a building on the south side of the square. The government acquired the site in 1750 and it quickly became the administrative, commercial and social center of Basseterre . When St. Kitts and Nevis gained political independence (September 19, 1983) the square was renamed.
