Founded in 1948, the Independent School League ( ISL ) is appointed by sixteen private schools located in New England that compete both physically and as a school. The ISL is the oldest private school sports association in the United States.

history

Founding members of the League , originally called the Private School League , were Belmont Hill, Brooks School, Buckingham Browne & Nichols (BB&N), The Governor's Academy, Milton Academy, Noble and Greenough School, St. Mark's School and Thayer Academy. Similar to the Ivy League , American football began informally. The formal founding was followed as early as 1948.

In 1968 the Middlesex School was added. In 1972 the Groton School replaced the Tabor Academy. In 1972 the Rivers School and Saint Sebastian's School were added as further private schools from the Boston area. In 1974 the Roxbury Latin School was added. The league was renamed the Independent School League in the same year.

In the mid-1970s, the St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire and the Lawrence Academy in Groton and St. George's School in Newport followed.

These New England schools are sometimes grouped under the term Saint Grottlesex . They are among the most traditional and expensive elite boarding schools and private schools in the USA.
