Saint Grottlesex
The term Saint Grottlesex encompasses various elite American boarding schools in New England . Many graduates from these schools then attend excellent universities in the country. All schools belong to the Independent School League and include
- St. Paul's School (New Hampshire) in Concord, New Hampshire,
- St. Mark's School in Massachusetts,
- St. George's School in Newport,
- Groton School and
- Middlesex School .
The term, a suitcase word , describes the founding of boys' schools from the mid to late 19th century. Mostly leaning towards the Episcopal Church of the United States of America , the students came mainly from wealthy families. The schools were based on the model of well-known English public schools such as Eton or Harrow.
In contrast, earlier American elite boarding schools were more puritanical and anti-English oriented. The so-called academies, namely Andover , Exeter , Deerfield and Milton , had been founded as early as the 18th century. According to a widespread bon mot, they combined "the imparting of knowledge with puritanical hellfire" and were particularly regarded as a cadre forge for preachers and church people.
