The submarines of Project 940 ( Lenok ; NATO code: India ) are a submarine class of the Soviet Navy . The units are conventionally powered and their task is to support sea rescue operations for crews of sunken submarines. For this purpose, the boats are equipped with two rescue submarines ( Deep Submergence Rescue Vessel ), which are located in two loading bays behind the tower . These DSRV can dive 500-1000 m deep and offer space for 24 passengers and a crew of three.
The India boats are equipped with extensive medical equipment, including pressure chambers and first aid areas, in order to be able to treat several dozen people at the same time. However, the boats primarily play the role of a carrier vehicle for the DSRV.
Two units of the class were built in the mid-1970s and deleted from the fleet list in 1990. Both were canceled in 1995.
