Indian Appropriations Act is an American law that was signed by the President of the United States of America , Grover Cleveland , on March 2, 1889 . The law allowed the colonization of the unassigned country in what is now the US state of Oklahoma . The law stipulated that the land should be given under the Homestead Act . The award was determined by a land run. Settlers who settled in the area prior to the launch date have been evicted by the US military. Grover Cleveland signed the bill days before it was handed over to his successor, President Benjamin Harrison . This took care of the implementation. The Oklahoma Land Run took place on April 22, 1889. Over 50,000 settlers took part in it and tried to win a piece of land.
