history

Indian Coffee House in Kolkata

In the 1950s, the Indian State Coffee Authority decided to drastically reduce its network of coffee restaurants. In view of their threatened jobs, many employees expressed their willingness to become members of productive cooperatives. The project was supported by leading representatives of the Communist Party of India and in 1957 the "Indian Coffee House" was founded with around 400 restaurants.

Indian Coffee House in the Indian state of Kerala is most strongly represented . The first restaurant opened its doors in Bangalore in 1957 , and the second in Delhi in the same year.

There are currently 13 relevant cooperatives and one umbrella organization. Travel guides praise the moderate prices with acceptable quality, but the chain is also granted the rather nostalgic charm of an institution that has been overtaken by the zeitgeist.

The Indian Coffee House in Trivandrum is a landmark with its idiosyncratic architecture and brick-red screw shape .
