The Asociación Interétnica de Desarrollo de la Selva Peruana (AIDESEP), German: Indigenous Association for Development in the Peruvian Rainforest , is an association of social organizations from the Peruvian Amazon region.

The association with offices in Santa Catarina was founded in 1980. Today 57 regional and local organizations from the Amazon region are united in it. It represents 1,350 communities and thus 350,000 indigenous people in the region. Their languages belong to 16 different language families. Its current president is Alberto Pizango .

history

In the early 1970s, a representative movement of the indigenous people living there emerged in the Peruvian Amazon region. The first attempts at independent organization were defense mechanisms against the intrusion of settlers and companies for the extraction of raw materials. Organizations initially emerged at local and community level, and later also at regional level. The emergence of the first indigenous organizations in Peru was also facilitated by the Ley de Comunidades Nativas law passed in 1974 , in which, among other things, Article 11 stipulated: "The territorial property of the indigenous communities is non-transferable, non- statute-barred and non-attachable". The initiators of this movement were the ethnic groups of the Asháninka with their organization Central de Comunidades Nativas de la Selva Central (CECONSEC), the Shipibo with their organization Federación de Comunidades Nativas de Ucayali (FECONAU) and the Awajun with their organization Consejo Aguaruna y Huambisa (CAH ). These three peoples founded the Asociación Interétnica de Desarrollo de la Selva Peruana - AIDESEP , at the beginning of the 1980s . The founding president was the human rights activist and environmentalist Evaristo Nugkuag .

organization structure

The association is headed by a Consejo Nacional (German: Nationalrat), consisting of a president, vice-president, treasurer, secretary and assessor. The Consejo Nacional is elected every three years by a national assembly, in which the representatives of all indigenous organizations of the Peruvian Amazon take part. The Consejo Nacional Ampliado (German: extended National Council), which is composed of representatives from every regional indigenous organization, meets every six months . The most important decisions about the political path of the organization are made in these assemblies.

aims

The organization campaigns for indigenous rights and the recognition of territories at the national level. Her goals include:
