Information Rights Management

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Information Rights Management (IRM) is an approach in computer science that controls access to digital information on the basis of pre-assigned protection categories . The approach includes the interaction of security-related , IT-supported and procedural implementations. A similar procedure is known from the music and film industry with Digital Rights Management (DRM) - this protects copyright in a comprehensive manner. IRM relies on the encryption of file contents. In addition, the owner of the information adds rights information in the form of metadata to the individual files . By interpreting this metadata, the file content is protected from unauthorized access, editing, copying or distribution. In addition, an IRM can provide long-term protection against unwanted leakage of information ( data leakage / loss prevention - DLP).

With the centralization and consolidation of IT infrastructures , an IRM offers approaches to alternatively map separation and protection mechanisms previously implemented by physical separation.

Manufacturer / Products

Several software manufacturers offer solutions for the IRM with very different functional ranges and different implementation depths:

  • Microsoft: Azure Information Protection
  • Adobe: Experience Manager - Document Security
  • secunet: SINA Workflow
  • Open text: Documentum
