Ingersoll is an originally American watch brand.

history

In 1880 the brothers Robert Hawley and Charles Henry Ingersoll founded the mail order company Robert H. Ingersoll & Brother in New York . From 1892 they sold the first clocks, produced by the Waterbury Clock Company .

"Dollar watch"

In 1896 the Ingersoll brothers introduced the "Yankee" pocket watch. Due to its striking sales price of $ 1.00 (at that time about a day's wage) it became famous worldwide under the name "Dollar Watch". In 1899, 8,000 pieces a day were made from stamped parts in inexpensive mass production. More than 40 million of these watches have been sold within 20 years.

In 1905 Ingersoll went to England and offered the "Crown" pocket watch for 5 shillings (then about $ 1.00). These were produced by Ingersoll Watch Company Ltd. in London.

Bankruptcy and takeover

In December 1921 "Robert H. Ingersoll & Brother" had to file for bankruptcy. By this time the company had already sold around 70,000,000 watches. A year later, against opposition from the two brothers, it was taken over by the Waterbury Clock Company for $ 1,500,000. The brothers kept the brand name and sold under him, among other things, the first Mickey Mouse watch in which the hands were designed in the shape of Mickey Mouse's hands.

Ingersoll today
