History of the company

In 1858, the provincial capital Innsbruck built a gasworks to illuminate the city's streets and supply the population with energy.

In 1890 the city of Innsbruck's first high-pressure drinking water pipeline went into operation. Seven years later, the first hydropower plant to supply the city with electrical energy was built in Innsbruck.

Until 1994, the municipal economic core businesses - the electricity works, the gas works and the water works - were run by the city of Innsbruck as Innsbrucker Stadtwerke . On March 11, 1994 Innsbrucker Kommunalbetriebe Aktiengesellschaft (IKB AG) was founded as a framework or shell company, i.e. as a financial shell. On September 14th, the real economic establishment of the IKB AG took place by bringing in the electricity works, the gas works, the water works, the sewage treatment plant and the baths. At the same time, Innsbrucker Kommunalbetriebe AG took a 51% stake in the landfill (IRAB GmbH) and 96% in Innsbrucker Verkehrsbetriebe AG and Stubaitalbahn AG.

As a further step, the remaining 49% of the shares in IRAB GmbH were acquired and IRAB GmbH merged with Innsbrucker Kommunalbetriebe AG . In 1998 the Innsbrucker Kommunalbetriebe AG bought the sewer system of the city of Innsbruck as well as the municipal waste collection.

In 2002 the previous sole owner, the city of Innsbruck, sold 25% plus one share to TIWAG – Tiroler Wasserkraft AG. In 2003 the gas division was spun off and merged with TIGAS - Erdgas Tirol GmbH. In 2006 TIWAG - Tiroler Wasserkraft AG acquired another 25% minus two shares.

Manfried Gantner has been Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Innsbrucker Kommunalbetriebe AG since 2003 .
