Inquire is a German progressive rock band from the Cologne / Düsseldorf area ( Leichlingen ).

Band history

Inquire was founded in 1996 by Dieter Cromen (guitar / vocals), Thomas Kohls (drums) and Robert Köhler (keyboards). Shortly after the founding, Michael Eckert (bass) joined the band. Previous bands of the musicians were, among others, Trespass, Tokyo and Kampai, which had considerable success at the local level. For example, the band Trespass (with Dieter Cromen and Thomas Kohls) produced a video clip in cooperation with the WDR in 1986, which was broadcast on the program “Current Hour”.

At first, Inquire's live program consisted almost exclusively of cover songs, including by Camel , ELP and IQ . In 1998 Inquire began to write their own pieces, when all the songs were finished in 1999, the album Inquire Within was recorded in just five days under live conditions at So Far Studio in Solingen.

In 2000 there was a change in line-up, Uli Mückenheim replaced Michael Eckert on bass.

If you listen to Inquire Within still clearly the musical influences of Inquire, this changes already with the next CD, The Neck Pillow in 2000. The factory Neck Pillow to German The Bettwurst , the first concept pieces originated from Inquire. Musically, Inquire slowly develop their own style on the album. Neck Pillow is also the musical reproduction of the German film Die Bettwurst by Rosa von Praunheim from 1970. The film impressed the musicians so much that the idea of reproducing the film musically arose early on.

In 2001 the album Das Auge ist der Erste Kreis was created , it contains various live recordings and previously unreleased studio material. The CD is a pure in-house production and was recorded for all hardcore Inquire fans.

After two years of extremely creative work, the material for the fourth Inquire album, Melancholia, was born . Inquire's first concept album was based on the book by Jean-Paul Sartre Der Ekel . Melancholia is also the first album to be released in partnership with Musea Records . As a bonus, Melancholia includes a second CD called Long Live Rock and Roll . It is the Inquire version of Louis Vierne's Third Organ Symphony , composed between 1906 and 1919.

Shortly after the release of Melancholia in 2003, it became apparent that the Inquire musicians would part ways. This was mainly due to professional and family reasons.

In the spring of 2009, the three founding members of Inquire met and decided to reunite the band. Since May 2009 Inquire has been working on old and new material again. The fifth Inquire CD will be recorded in the foreseeable future.

Dieter Cromen died on September 14, 2015.
