Instability index

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The instability index describes the rate of degradation and thus the biological half-life of proteins .

properties

Proteins are broken down into peptides and amino acids in organisms by proteolysis and non-enzymatic hydrolysis . The composition and sequence of the amino acids contained in a protein has an influence on its breakdown rate and its distribution coefficient .

The instability index of proteins is a key figure for biochemical description in addition to the hydropathic index and the aliphatic index and can be determined by the ProtParam program from the amino acid sequence or the Uniprot database entry .
