history

On January 4, 2019, the user account @world_record_egg was created on Instagram . The anonymous user published a photo of a brown bird's egg standing upright against a white background with the caption “Let's set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this. ”( Let's set a world record together and get the most likes for a picture on Instagram. It should beat Kylie Jenner's current world record (18 million)! We can do it. ). Kylie Jenner's photo with her newborn daughter Stormi had 18.4 million likes by then.

The Instagram egg was soon nicknamed Eugene. In less than 10 days, Eugene hit 18.4 million likes. At the beginning of February 2019, the egg had over 50 million likes, which means it holds the new world record by far not only on Instagram, but also in a comparison of all social media platforms. The Instagram egg Eugene received wide coverage in the mass media.

Kylie Jenner responded to her world record loss with a video in which she cracks an egg and lets it fry on the hot asphalt.

Since the owner of the user account was unknown, there was public speculation about the author of the action. On February 3, 2019, the video portal Hulu and the New York Times published the name of the author. The Instagram egg Eugene was created by British advertising executive Chris Godfrey together with two colleagues, Alissa Khan-Whelan and CJ Brown.

On January 18, 2019, a second photo of Eugene was posted on Instagram. The egg now had a slight crack in the upper right. On the third photo from January 22, 2019, two more pronounced cracks could be seen. The fourth photo from January 29, 2019 showed another crack on the right side. The fifth photo, published February 1, 2019, showed a crack with a strong seam, as is common on a football ; this picture appeared shortly before the 53rd Super Bowl , which took place on February 3, 2019. All of these pictures of Eugene got a few million likes, but fell far short of the first picture.

On February 3, 2019, a video appeared on Hulu showing Eugene breaking the egg. The accompanying text reads: “The pressure of social media is getting to me” ( The pressure of social media got me ). The video links to the website of Mental Health America , a non-profit organization that helps people with mental health problems .
