Hermann Anton Bernhard von Velen (* the thirtieth April 1698 in Velen , † 29. April 1767 ibid) was to succeed his father office Droste in Meppen and canon in Muenster.

Life

Origin and family

Hermann Anton Bernhard von Velen grew up as the son of Christoph Alexander von Velen (Drost zu Meppen) and his wife Maria Dorothea Margaretha von Schenking zu Bevern († 1703) together with his brothers Friedrich Christian and Alexander Ferdinand in the von Velen family , one of the oldest Noble families in Westphalia . On September 8, 1730, he married Anna Dorothea Pelegrina von Ascheberg zu Botzlar († 1741, canon in Metelen, heir) in Metelen. The marriage resulted in several daughters, including Anna Theresia Francis (* 1735, ⚭ June 19, 1756 with Clemens August von Landsberg zu Erwitte ). On May 25, 1743, after Anna's death, with papal dispensation, he married Maria Alexandrine von Merveldt zu Westerwinkel (1716–1770).

Career and work

With the receipt of the tonsure on October 25, 1711, Hermann Anton was prepared for a spiritual life. He attended the high school in Münster and received the Low Orders on August 24, 1714 . This was followed by almost four years of study in Rome . In 1717 he received by his uncle Anton Heinrich Hermann a Dompräbende in Münster , to which he on 11 April 1726 in favor of his brother Alexander Ferdinand renounced . In 1721 he was assigned to his father as Drost of the Meppen office before he was appointed after his death on December 28, 1725. With the revolt to the knighthood of Münster on January 7th, 1728 he belonged to the state parliament , a body made up of the three estates. His task was to regulate the tax system and from 1447 also the feudal system in the bishopric of Münster . Hermann's successor in the office of Drosten zu Meppen was his son-in-law Clemens August von Landsberg.

Extinction of the male line Velen; Landsberg-Velen family union

Both of Hermann's marriages remained without male descendants, so that with his death the family in this line died out. Previously he had formed a Fideikommiss on the condition that his successors or heirs must bear the name and coat of arms of the von Velen family. Hermann's daughter Anna Theresia, who was married to Clemens August von Landsberg zu Erwitte, became the sole heir. So it came to a family merger of Landsberg-Velen. Since the year 1792 the baronial family of the von Landsberg officially carried the name affix "Velen". This was also reflected in the association of coats of arms.

Others

At the beginning of the 18th century, Hermann and his wife Anna gave the architect Peter Pictorius the Elder. J. the order to build a manor. The coat of arms of the Velen couple is located above the portal of the Altenkamp manor .
