Installation and building technology is a modular apprenticeship in Austria with a training period of three or four years.

Installation and building technicians ensure that companies are supplied with heat, water and air. To do this, they plan and assemble ventilation, heating and water supply systems, install supply and discharge lines, gas flow heaters, hot water storage tanks, heating and air conditioning systems and take care of the discharge and disposal of exhaust gases and wastewater. Typical employers for installation and building technicians are craft businesses, companies in the energy and water supply sector, as well as companies that specialize in building and supply technology.

The training in the modular apprenticeship installation and building technology includes the mandatory two-year training in the basic module installation and building technology and a one-year training in one of the following main modules:

In addition, a second main module or one of the following special modules can be chosen in a further year of training (in the 4th year of training):

  • Bathroom design
  • Eco-energy technology
  • Control and regulation technology
  • Building services planning

Depending on the combination, the apprenticeship period is either three or four years.

Requirements and activities

  • Cutting and processing of pipe sections and pipeline parts
  • Milling wall, floor and ceiling openings
  • Assembly of measuring and control devices, pumps, ventilators or fittings

  • Installation of wall and ceiling fixings
  • Assembly and maintenance of heating, hot water and water treatment systems as well as ventilation and air extraction systems
  • Assembly of sanitary facilities (sinks, showers, toilets)
  • Installation of sewer and exhaust pipes
  • General maintenance and repair work
