The Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN) (German: Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation) is a semi-public institution based in Kinshasa that controls and guards the protected areas of the Democratic Republic of the Congo . Cosma Wilungula Balongelwa is General Director of the ICCN. The institute is a partner of numerous international organizations and agreements, such as CITES and IUCN .
structure
The task is to control and guard the national parks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and all other protected areas. The institute collects field data and analyzes it. The ICCN rangers are partially armed. Around 400 ICCN rangers are deployed in the large Virunga National Park ; Since 2006, over 150 rangers have been killed in this park by attacks by rebels and militias.
The work is financed with funds from the Congolese state.
