The Institut Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt is a multi-discipline house for the fine and applied arts in Darmstadt , Hesse. With its exhibition building including the wedding tower , the Museum Künstlerkolonie and the municipal art collection, it has been a place for research, presentation and communication of art and culture since 1900 with a special focus on contemporary art. It was founded in 1899.

Fields of activity

The institute looks after, administers and expands the art collection of the city of Darmstadt. The core inventory of around 15,000 works spans an arc from Romanticism to contemporary art and includes oil paintings, watercolors, pastels, drawings, etchings, lithographs, sculptures, handicrafts, furniture ensembles, architectural models, photographs, video films and installations. The art collection of the city of Darmstadt is looked after by the institute in terms of restoration and is made accessible to a broad public through loans to various national and international museums. In addition to its own research on the Darmstadt artists' colony, the institute also gives scientists access to the archives.

Parallel to the presentation of the permanent collection on Art Nouveau and Early Modernism, the Mathildenhöhe Institute organizes special exhibitions several times a year on art and culture from Romanticism to contemporary art. A wide range of educational opportunities for all age groups is offered for the exhibitions. The exhibitions are each accompanied by an extensive supporting program with lectures, panel discussions, film nights and illumination festivals, concerts and special tours. In addition, the awarding of the Wilhelm Loth Prize awarded by the City of Darmstadt is held at the Mathildenhöhe Institute at regular intervals and combined with an exhibition of the prize winner on Mathildenhöhe.

Mathildenhöhe has been a place for cultural events and festive occasions since 1900. The Mathildenhöhe Institute builds on this with its current activity as a venue for concerts and lectures as well as series of events such as the Darmstadt Photography Days or the International Summer Courses for New Music .
