The Museum Künstlerkolonie on the Darmstadt Mathildenhöhe is dedicated to the history of the Darmstadt artists' colony , its exhibitions and the artists of the colony.

history

The museum is located in the Ernst Ludwig House, which was reconstructed at the end of the 1980s, and is the group's joint studio building, which was built from 1900 onwards based on plans by Joseph Maria Olbrich for the exhibition “A Document of German Art” (1901). The museum, which opened in May 1990, documents the 15-year history of the Darmstadt artist community from 1899 to 1914 and provides an overview of the works of its 23 members.

In the foyer, a chronology of the artists' colony serves as an introduction; you then enter the small museum in the middle of three rooms. The wooden interior of one of the Mathildenhöhenhäuser from 1908 was installed there after it was torn out of its original location in the 1960s because the state wanted to be reconstructed there from 1901. The exhibits in the rooms to the right and left, furniture and other utensils, stand freely in the room on flat plinths and pedestals. An attempt was made to recreate the spatial dimensions of the living spaces for which the exhibited furniture, ceramics and metal objects were designed. Models also depict the settlement in various stages of development.

Each artist is briefly presented biographically and with his or her work.
