The Institute for Competitive Intelligence (ICI) was founded in Germany in 2004 by Rainer Michaeli. The aim was to provide practitioners with a flexible training program to become a certified competitive intelligence professional. The training program is offered on four continents in 14 countries. The languages of instruction are German, English, French and Spanish. In total, almost 30 teachers teach for the Institute for Competitive Intelligence.

Director of studies Rainer Michaeli wrote the book "Competitive Intelligence - Achieving strategic competitive advantages through systematic competition, market and technology analyzes".

Training program

The training program of the Institute for Competitive Intelligence is based on the Body of Knowledge in Competitive Intelligence which is organized by a 10-member committee of Strategic and in Competitive Intelligence Professionals (SCIP - formerly Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals) under the leadership of John Prescott (Chair), University Pittsburgh, and published in 2008.

The entire training program (Certificate of Proficiency in Competitive Intelligence) consists of a total of 22 workshops divided into the modules Basics, Research, Analysis, Management and Strategy. All modules are also offered as individual certificates. The breadth of competencies in the CI Body of Knowledge is reflected in the interdisciplinary, international and practice-oriented selection of the institute's teaching staff. The speakers include CI professionals from companies as well as university professors from various fields.

The training program received widespread attention in the German-speaking national press. But the institute is also very successful internationally and offers courses in the USA, India, Brazil, England, France, Spain and other countries.

In-house training

In addition to the open workshops, the Institute for Competitive Intelligence organizes numerous in-house trainings. Customers include international corporations but also small and medium-sized companies.

Conferences

In addition, the Institute for Competitive Intelligence has been organizing the International Competitive Intelligence Conference since 2009. The conference takes place annually and is one of the largest conferences in the field of competitive intelligence and market intelligence in Europe.

The École de guerre économique (EGE) in France and the Academy for Competitive Intelligence (ACI) in the USA offer comparable programs with a focus on Competitive Intelligence / Market Intelligence. In contrast to the Institute for Competitive Intelligence, the École de guerre économique focuses very strongly on the topics of information warfare and interstate economic war. The training programs of the Academy of Competitive Intelligence distinguish between two certification levels, which together comprise only about 40% of the scope of the ICI certificate “Certificate of Proficiency in Competitive Intelligence”.
