Basel Institute for Immunology
The Basel Institute for Immunology (BII, also Institut für Immunologie Basel ) was one of the most important centers for research in the field of immunology .
In 1969 the pharmaceutical company Hoffmann-La Roche decided to start a new kind of research project. The institute was opened in 1971 under the direction of Niels K. Jerne . Roche donated $ 24 million annually without any special conditions. Over 500 scientists conducted research at the institute, 27 of which received important awards (including 3 Nobel Prizes for Georges Köhler , Niels Kaj Jerne and Susumu Tonegawa ).
In 2000 the institute was dissolved and replaced by a center for medical genomics .
