The Institute for Beam Tools (IFSW) belongs to the University of Stuttgart and is part of Faculty 7 ( construction , production and vehicle technology ).

history

The Institute for Beam Tools was founded in 1986 with Helmut Hügel as director of the institute with the aim of researching manufacturing processes based on radiation and supporting their introduction into industrial production. Since the institute was founded, the focus of research activities has primarily been on the laser beam tool . From the beginning, a holistic approach was pursued, from the development of laser beam sources to investigations into the interaction of laser radiation with matter up to process development . The focus of these investigations is on laser welding , laser cutting , laser drilling and laser ablation .

The institute achieved international fame primarily through the development of the disk laser , for which the working group was awarded the Berthold Leibinger Innovation Prize in 2002 .

In 2004 Thomas Graf took over the management of the institute.
