The Institut national polytechnique de Lorraine (INPL) is a French university in Nancy. It is part of Nancy-Université . In organizational terms, the INPL is divided into seven engineering universities and over 20 laboratories.

history

For more information on the French higher education system, please see the article Grande école

The founding members of the INPL were created at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. They were intended to meet the growing demand in French industry for well-trained engineers and managers . Furthermore, they should be at the forefront of technological progress and guide it.

In 1971 the five engineering colleges close

together to the INPL. The following schools will be added later:

  • EEIGM - École européenne d'ingénieurs en génie des matériaux (1991)
  • ENSGSI - École nationale supérieure en génie des systèmes industriels (1993)

In July 2001, the INPL merged with the other two universities in Nancy to form the Nancy-Université network . This enables the students to use the respective libraries, for example, and has resulted in a uniform WLAN .

President of the INPL
period Surname specialization
1971-1976 Georges Champier metallurgy
1976-1981 Claude Pair Computer science

The basic order corresponds to a French university and is regulated by a law. The INPL is managed by a president who is elected by the representatives of the professors, academic staff and students for a period of 4 years, with the one-off possibility of an extension for a further 4 years.

The organization of the INPL is characterized by a strong executive, similar to the French political system . The President appoints the external members of the Board of Directors and chairs it. He is also chairman of the commission for studies and teaching (French conseil des études et de la vie universitaire) and the research commission (French conseil scientifique ).

Education

Since all participating engineering colleges belong to the Grandes Écoles , admission to studies at the INPL is only possible after completing the integrated preparatory classes and passing the national selection procedure ( Concours ). Together with the INPG in Grenoble and the INPT in Toulouse, the INPL also offers its own preparatory classes. In the French university system, these form a study section comparable to the German undergraduate degree. As a result, the students already have broad prior knowledge of higher mathematics , physics and chemistry when they begin their actual studies at one of the Écoles . A lateral entry is possible for foreigners and particularly good university students.

Despite the structure prescribed by the INPL, the engineering universities remain independent in matters of teaching and sometimes award their own diplomas , bachelor's and master's degrees.

research

At the moment there are around 20 laboratories in the INPL. Often the scientists employed there are also lecturers at one or more of the Ecoles . Over 100 dissertations are supervised every year .
