The Spanish National Institute for Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica, Óptica y Electrónica (INAOE) is a Mexican research institute in Tonantzintla , Puebla . It is one of 30 research institutions of the Centros Públicos de Investigación of the Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACyT).

It was established by presidential decree on November 11, 1971 and employs over 100 researchers in astrophysics , optics , electronics and computer science . Important projects in which the institute is involved are the Large Millimeter Telescope and the Gran Telescopio Canarias .
