The Intel 8257 is a programmable DMA control module for 8-bit microcontrollers.

With four DMA channels, the 8257 supports the fast transfer of data from external components or memories to the system memory without further involvement of the CPU . The faster version 8257-5 is suitable for Intel-8080 / 8085 processor family. The module is supplied in a 40-pin DIL housing . He was u. a. licensed to NEC and Siemens .

A further development is the 8237 , which u. a. was used in the first IBM PCs .
