The Intercity 225 is a fully electric British high-speed train , named for its designed maximum speed. It consists of a class 91 electric locomotive , 9 Mark 4 cars and a control car. The main area of operation is the East Coast Main Line , where the trains were used from 1990. A national speed record of 162 mph (260 km / h) was set on September 17, 1989 .
Intercity train traffic on non-electrified routes was carried out with the diesel- powered Intercity 125 . The successors to both trains will be procured through the Intercity Express program .
