The Interdisciplinary Center For Advanced Materials Simulation (ICAMS) is a research institution founded in 2008 at the Ruhr University Bochum . The aim of the interdisciplinary institute is the development of scale-bridging processes for the computer simulation of modern materials and their transfer to industrial research. For this purpose, methods relevant for materials research are to be combined across all length scales, from the atomistic structure to macroscopic properties.

ICAMS was created by an industrial consortium led by ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe AG, Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung GmbH, Robert Bosch GmbH, Bayer MaterialScience AG, Bayer Technology Services GmbH and Benteler Stahl / Rohr GmbH, as well as the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the European Union funded. This start-up funding ended in 2014.

The center comprises three endowed chairs:

  • Atomistic modeling and simulation
  • Cross-scale thermodynamic and kinetic simulation
  • Micromechanical and macroscopic modeling

and the two independent research groups

  • High-Performance Computing in Materials Science
  • Scale bridging simulation of functional composites

In addition, four "Advanced Study Groups" located at external institutions are integrated into ICAMS.

At the end of 2013 there were around 75 employees at the institute.
