The International Academy of Osteopathy (IAO) is an international academy that offers academic training to become an osteopath .

history

It was founded in 1987 by Grégoire Lason, Luc Peeters and Michel Janssens. In 1987 the IAO founded the first osteopathy school in Germany and in 1992 a second school was added in Norway. A year later the ILO started the first full-time school in Belgium .

On October 31, 1998, ILO faculty graduated for the first time in osteopathic medicine. On June 24, 1999, the Belgian State Gazette published the Colla law, which recognizes osteopathy in Belgium. The directors of the ILO were the driving force behind state recognition. The IAO founded its first osteopathic school in Denmark in 2000. In 2005 and 2006 schools in Austria resp. of Switzerland added.

The ILO sued the Belgian state on May 16, 2008 for failing to implement the law on non-conventional treatments. The court had found the ILO right in the first instance. The Belgian state has appealed the judgment.

With around 2000 students and a hundred doctors from 17 countries, the IAO is the largest European school for osteopathy.

In addition to regular courses and advanced training courses, the ILO has published several scientific works, including a. an “Osteopathic Encyclopedia” which includes a series of e-books. The ILO has also published the first Dutch book on osteopathy (The Pelvis).

The ILO has been headed by Grégoire Lason and Luc Peeters since 1987.

The ILO has academic relationships with several schools, universities and professional associations. In 2004 the ILO's study programs were accredited by The University of Wales. Graduates receive a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Osteopathy. In 2005 the IAO became a member of the Osteopathic International Alliance - OIA. On May 18, 2006, the IAO, together with other European schools aiming for the academization of osteopathy, founded The European Register for Professional Osteopaths - ERPO. In January 2009 the IAO concluded a cooperation agreement with the University of Applied Sciences Innsbruck, which enables IAO graduates to obtain a Master of Science degree in osteopathy. The IAO and the Collège d'Ostéopathie Traditionnelle du Nord (COTN) in Lille, France, have been cooperating on an academic level since June 2009 in education, further training and research. In addition, an exchange of students and lecturers was agreed. Graduates from both schools can thus be recognized in Belgium and France at the same time and obtain a Bachelor of Science degree.

Training

The training corresponds to the Bologna Declaration and enables the qualifications Diploma in Osteopathy, Bachelor of Science with Honors in Osteopathy or Master of Science in Osteopathy. The IAO offers training opportunities that lead to a Diploma in Osteopathy, a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Osteopathy or a Master of Science in Osteopathy.

In addition, the IAO also conducts training in “manipulation and soft parts” in the Netherlands and Belgium, as well as further training courses such as osteopathy in sport, pediatrics and nutrition.

In addition, part-time training takes place. In Ghent (Belgium) full-time education takes place after finishing secondary school.

Course locations are in Belgium (Antwerp, Gent, Louvain-la-Neuve), the Netherlands (Zeist), Germany (Berlin, Bonlanden (Memmingen), Darmstadt, Dortmund, Dresden, Erlangen, Hamburg, Leipzig, Osnabrück, Munich, Neuss, Passau , Stuttgart), Austria (Innsbruck, Vienna), Switzerland (Brunnen) and Denmark (Copenhagen).
