The International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam ( IAPWS , formerly IAPS ) is an international association of 12 national organizations dedicated to researching the properties of water and its steam . The focus is on the thermodynamic properties at high temperatures.

The goals of the IAPWS are:

  • Provision of internationally recognized formulations for the properties of light and heavy steam, water and selected aqueous solutions for scientific and industrial applications.
  • Provision of technical guidelines, obtained through international expert consensus, on cycle chemistry and technology for steam power cycles in fossil and combined plants and other industrial applications.
  • Define research needs and promote and coordinate research on steam, water and selected aqueous systems that are important in thermal energy cycles.
  • Collection and evaluation of the resulting data as well as communication and dissemination of the results.
  • Provision of an international forum for the exchange of experiences, ideas and research results on aqueous high-temperature media.

Current members are Great Britain and Ireland, Canada, the Czech Republic, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, Scandinavia (Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden) and the United States, as well as associate members Argentina and Brazil, Australia, China, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy and Switzerland.

The association is divided into four working groups and is the organizer of the "International Conference on the Properties of Water and Steam", which is held every four or five years at different locations. In 2004 this was the 14th conference with the venue Kyōto , in 2008 the 15th conference in Berlin , 2013 the 16th conference in London and in 2018 the 17th conference in Prague .
