International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) is the largest sports association in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu .

It is a for-profit company that hosts several of the largest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) tournaments in the world, including the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, the World No-Gi (Without Gi ) and Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship, and European Open Jiu-Jitsu Championship. The association was founded by Carlos Gracie Jr., the head of one of the largest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu associations, Gracie Barra in 2002. The IBJJF uses the set of rules of the Confederação Brasileira de Jiu-Jitsu. [1]

prehistory

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the South American variant of Kōdōkan Judo and was developed by the brothers Carlos and Helio Gracie . Carlos Gracie learned Judo from Mitsuyo Maeda , a student of Kanō Jigorō and passed it on to his younger brother Hélio. Hélio was physically rather skinny and could not use many of the traditional judo techniques. For this reason, he changed the mechanics and leverage of many techniques, making them more effective and also applicable to physically weaker people. Hélio and Carlos taught their children Judo, creating the next generation of fighters and teachers who spread Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and proved the efficiency of the style in many Vale Tudo challenge battles.

In the 1970s, one of Hélio's sons, Rorion Gracie, came to the USA to pursue a career. He taught the family style in his garage, and slowly more and more people in the USA became interested in this martial art.

In the early 1990s, Rorion opened a large academy in Los Angeles and, together with advertising expert Art Davie, created the “ Ultimate Fighting Championship ” (“UFC” for short).

In these fights, which were broadcast on American pay-per-view television, martial artists of various styles fought against each other. Originally there were only a few rules about this. You could neither bite nor stab your opponent in the eye. Head butts, hair pulling and blows to the groin were undesirable, but allowed.

The goal was the enemy ko beat him or her to Aufgabezu force. Royce Gracie, the son of Hélio Gracie, won three of the four UFC tournaments as the easiest participant. He ended all won fights by submitting the opponent. To date, he is the only fighter who has ever won four fights in one event.

This led to the fact that the sport became known to a wide public and more and more schools were opening that taught martial arts.] In order to be able to organize competitions between these schools according to uniform rules, but also to ensure a binding and uniform graduation system , a Umbrella organization required, which brought enough influence with it to unite as many schools as possible under this set of rules .

Therefore, Carlos Gracie founded the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) in 2002

IBJJF Gi tournaments

Athletes participating in official IBJJF tournaments may receive ranking points which apply to their position in the official IBJJF ranking. In the 2017/2018 point system, the first place in weight classes is worth 9 points, the second 3 points and the third 1 point. The first place in the open class is worth 13.5 points, the second 4.5 points and the third 1.5 points. The IBJJF weights tournaments based on their importance on the calendar. The weight of a tournament is one factor in calculating the number of points the athlete can gain from participating. The IBJJF also uses a third criterion to determine the ranking points, namely the calendar season in which the tournament took place. For the 2017/2018 season, the ranking points achieved at an IBJJF event from 2015/16 onwards will be multiplied by 1, 2016/2017 by 2 and 2017/2018 by 3.

Points are calculated as follows:

Number of points × tournament rank × annual weighting

Examples: - 2017/2018 World Championship 1st place Open Division 13.5 for the first × 7 tournament ranking × 3 season weighting = 283.5 points 2015/2016 British National 2nd place Medium Heavy Division 3 for the second × 1 tournament ranking × 1 season weighting = 3 points The Gi tournaments of the 2017/2018 season and their tournament weighting are listed below. criticism

For many years the IBJJF had an extensive monopoly . Graduations were based exclusively on IBJJF criteria. The tournaments were also only organized by the IBJJF. On the one hand, the very rigid set of rules is criticized at the IBJJF. Thus Heel Hooks self banned for black belts. In this way, even black belts who have fought exclusively according to IBJJF rules cannot stand up to schools in which heel hooks are practiced.

It is also criticized that many things are "overregulated" within the IBJJF. The colors of the GIs and the "jerseys" (rashguards) are prescribed at many tournaments.

The question of nepotism within the IBJJF has also been raised

A number of competitive formats have developed in recent years:

  • The martial artist Eddie Bravo developed Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with his " 10th Planet System ". In doing so, he pays particular attention to "No-GI suitability", i.e. the possibility of performing all techniques without GI. In particular, Gi strangle handles such as the baseball bat choke are no longer applicable or have been modified for No-GI. Spine locks and twisted foot levers are also mainly taught in these schools. The graduation also takes place completely without GI. Eddie Bravo also developed his own tournament format with its own set of rules independent of the IBJJF, the Eddie Bravo Invitionals (EBI)
  • In addition, the " Abu Dhabi World Championship " (ADCC) was another tournament format with its own set of rules, which shook the monopoly of the IBJJF.
  • The North American Grappling Association (NAGA) developed an alternative format early on. Heel hooks are also allowed here.
