The CISM , the International Center For Mechanical Sciences (Centro internazionale di scienze meccaniche), was founded in 1968 as a non-profit organization in Udine (seat in Palazzo Torso) to promote the exchange and application of the most modern methods in the technical sciences, especially between interdisciplinary subjects such as robotics , biomechanics and environmental technology with the subjects mathematics , information and systems theory , operations research , computer science andartificial intelligence .

For this purpose, the CISM regularly organizes courses, training sessions, workshops, symposia and conferences, which have resulted in 250 book publications so far. Funders are u. a. European scientific institutions and UNESCO . On the German side, there is a cooperation with the Technical University of Munich.

It is recognized as one of the world's leading competence centers for the simulation of porous materials, especially for concrete as a multiphase material and fluid-structure coupling .
